  • @whale This is so true. Everyone has struggles. Some people are just better at hiding (or burying) them. Others live their battles publicly.

  • @jackiechuichui @figma At least 2 I’ve tried in the past, but had to break into multiple auto-layout boxes to accomplish: 1) an ordered list of items broken up into multiple columns that flow vertically before wrapping, and 2) a Pinterest-style masonry layout that also flows vertically pre-wrap.

  • Wrapping in @figma’s auto-layout is a welcome (if long-overdue) addition. It now has the equivalent of flex-flow: row wrap. But I’m already wishing it also had flex-flow: column wrap.

  • @benblumenrose It was hard being a leader by example (keeping my hands dirty) and managing the team at Twitter. It got exponentially harder with each new team member.

I always felt like I didn’t have the time to do either side really well, and was always torn trying to balance both. @jw

  • @debunk__this @Chiebuniem_ @opensea No Gmail or Google logos from me. I worked at Google on visual design for a few years before Twitter. But none of my team’s logo revamps ever became public.

  • @ridd_design Oh, duh, hadn’t tried math yet. I use it often in other Adobe apps. Not sure why I hadn’t tried math in Figma yet. Thanks.

  • @ridd_design I haven’t been able to pay much attention this week (or lately). Have they added proportion to Figma box size constraints? Not just for entering measurements manually. But apply a proportion (say, 1:1, or 16:9) and proportion is locked and then scales with the parent?

  • @boltron And in the most awesome positions too.

  • @rsarver Amazing letter and outlook.

  • @stop @mgsiegler I like that they at least kept the layout Twitter-like with hanging profile photos, rather than stacked like FB’s layout.

  • @mgsiegler You shall read AND engage!

Personally, I’ve never been a fan of action icons in the timeline. They take away and add noise, especially when I don’t use them a majority of the time. I liked/like Tweetbot’s/Ivory’s option to hide them until you tap the post.

  • @stop

  • @stop He’s been the best and easiest, and is the family dog our daughters have grown up with. Gutted. 💔

  • @stop No chemo, as that rarely cures at this stage, and only prolongs. So now we try to keep him comfortable at home, and spend as long as we can with him. A few days. Maybe a week. Hardest call will be when to say goodbye. We hope he can somehow tell us when it’s time.

  • Popping on Twitter for a brief update, since I’ve shared about him here before.

We brought Buster (our 7yr old mix) home from the hospital late last night. Worst case scenario. Late stages of lymphoma, which explains how lethargic he’s been the last couple weeks.

  • @sdw I lament the absence of soul and personality in most designs. Relating ChatGPT to a search engine, as soon as we tried adding personality, users felt like the results were biased in a certain direction. Sometimes bias was good. Other times, it caused users to distrust quality.

  • @lyzl Beautifully written. Complex emotions. Thank you.

  • Such complicated emotions, and hard to process. Some live their battles with demons publicly, as @dooce often did. Others, we never know about.

    I’m heart-broken for her family.

    😢

  • @jeremyreiss @prospectsapp So awesome. Love that you followed your passion and turned it into something that seemed out of reach before you started. You’re an inspiration, JR!

  • @cameronmoll We’re a few years away at 14 and 11. This is definitely not the same phase as when they were younger. Parts of this phase are easier. Others are way more challenging as they work their way toward adulthood and independence

  • @Jennison @Concordia @ConcordiaAlumni This is awesome, Jennison. Congrats, it’s well-deserved.

I’m still grateful for your time and the chance to meet you at Twitter so many years ago!

  • @Carolkneece Wonderful to meet you, Carol. I hope you enjoyed your time this week, and found value for you.

  • @hemeon I just pushed out my second FB ad within the last month (for my wife’s event company). It’s amazing that a core part of their revenue model would be this confusing.

  • @mds I’d say you just defined Twitter.

  • @Frenchesque Receipts: A. All current options exist. If it doesn’t exist, it’s not an option. Can wait, but ideal may never happen. B. Moving a follow graph takes effort. Not everyone can do this easily, thus… some hardship. C. It’s going to get harder next week when the free API cuts off.

  • @halvorson I happened to sign into Post last night (after hearing they opened for everyone), and saw you there. That’s not what I meant for Elsewhere.

  • @philcoffman @charlesrpratt It may feel like that before you get started. But the advantage is that you can consolidate the people from all those other parties into one room. You have to do some work to find them (same as we did in early Twitter). But once you do, it’s a refreshing experience.

  • @halvorson @tweetbot I used to think the same thing – persevere here. But then I went looking elsewhere. Elsewhere is already good, and it keeps getting better. It just takes a bit of work. Like this place did in the early days. Ivory will be out soon, and is/will be as good as Tweetbot, or better.

  • @AndrewCrow I watched this 3 or 4 times, mesmerized by it. I like that the vehicle and the ground seem to be super smooth, it’s just the tire that bounces up and down.

  • @stop @hemeon Once you’re on, there’s the default Mastodon/iOS app, but it will probably leave you wanting better. Metatext and Mammoth are two that are pretty good, until Ivory is released (within the next month I think)

  • @hemeon That’s the big hurdle that paralyzes so many. Ultimately, it doesn’t matter much which one you start on because you can move later (which I’ve done once). If the big one (mastodon.social) is taking new accts, start there. Unless you hear of a more design-focused server.

  • @hemeon Join us over on the Mast. Lots of cool kids are already there. Way better vibes overall, esp once you rebuild your graph. Also, try to grab the Ivory client from Tapbots once they release it.

  • @jeffrey I’ve never had spicy, but that sounds so good.

  • @isaach So amazing to watch them grow up before our eyes. I’m envious – your dedication to this is resulting in an incredible collection.

  • @mikeindustries I dunno. Prik Nam Pla should be on that list too.

  • @byronrode Oh, right, battery life on Garmins rule too. Also have a Fenix 6 Pro, and I get 2 weeks out of mine. Tho my orig 6 Pro got replaced with a refurb by Garmin about 6 months ago when it went on the fritz and multiple resets wouldn’t fix it. It was like getting a brand new watch!

  • @TheRyanFord I totally get that. Before Garmin, I wore a Tag Carrera with large arabic numerals that I still love. But I really like and use all the features of my Garmin. All the features I want to use, and still round!

  • @byronrode @andybudd Yep – I’ve been on Garmin ever since I started running. Screen res and brightness could use improvement. But the button combo for naving every watch feature is pure muscle memory now. And it looks like an effing watch. Stepped thru Forerunners, now on a Fenix 6 that I love.

  • @tomcoates What are these trousers you speak of? Shorts all day every day down here forever and ever amen.

  • @andybudd My dislike is based entirely on the square form factor. If Apple went round, I’d be all in, Ultra or not. Square watches have always looked lame to me, even more when they have dark face backgrounds.

  • I’ll never forget the time I walked into a cafe in San Francisco (a busy one on Van Ness) and saw a guy at a table for 4 with a large PC tower, dual monitor setup, external keyboard, plus all the cables, running a full flight sim. Required a hand truck and bungees to load it all.

  • @photomatt Happy Birthday, Matt! https://t.co/g4QjOr7Wf1

  • @martymadrid Kindle version is much thinner.

  • @mikefarrell Go to @Namecheap. Have used them for 15+ years now. No issues, easy management, free whois privacy, good pricing on renewals, etc.

  • @mds @plasticmind I also back Fathom. Just like you asked for, lightweight, simple, they weight user privacy heavily, yoir tracker won’t get blocked (use a custom subdomain and DNS). Have used them for a little over a year now.

  • @mikeindustries We’ve booked multiple times (hotel/air) thru credit card travel sites, both seem to be white-labeled versions of Expedia. Always the same excuse of “you booked thru a 3rd party so 🤷”. I get that it also involves numbers on a balance sheet. But your point still stands: move them.

  • @SDPublicLibrary This is amazing. I keep learning about additional benefits available through our library that I never would have thought of. LinkedIn Learning is a great resource, especially within tech and design. And Gale’s test prep will be great for our children. Thank you!

  • @mulegirl @dburka So many of my non tech friends loved it, and always assumed I must have too. We couldn’t get past the first few episodes. Too painful a reminder.

  • @Malarkey @cameronmoll Connect the tape or phono input to a hidden Sonos amp and turn it into a lofi connected speaker!

  • @tomcoates Admit it, these questions sound like good prompts for AI-generated answers.
